John the Baptist

This is for a school assignment. I am talking about John the Baptist in this post.

Zacharias was told he would have joy in John’s birth and many would rejoice. Zacharias was promised even when Elisabeth was pregnant that John would be “great in the sight of the Lord” (Luke 1:15) and wouldn’t drink wine or strong drink, and would be filled with the Holy Ghost even in the womb. Zacharias was promised John would preach and turn the “disobedient to the wisdom of the just” (Luke 1:17). When Mary came to visit Elisabeth “the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost.” (Luke 1:41) I’m sure all of this was incredible for Zacharias to hear about his unborn son.

When John was born the neighbors and cousins of Elisabeth rejoiced. Elisabeth was pretty old and barren so it was a very exciting time for her and her family. When naming him, Elisabeth said his name would be John. It seems like this is a big deal that he wasn’t named after Zacharias or a family name because the scripture says: “And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marveled all.” (Luke 1:61-63)

I didn’t know this, but Isaiah and Malachi both prophesied of John the Baptist and his mission. John was of priestly descent, which was essential to prepare the way for the Savior. The Bible Dictionary states John the Baptist baptized people some months before and after he baptized the Savior. The Bible Dictionary also states at least two of Christ’s disciples were disciples of John before they met Jesus and it is probable he may have taught other disciples. Can you imagine being taught by a prophet?

When John was in prison he sent two of his disciples to inquire of Jesus. Jesus praised John as a prophet saying none was greater. John was entrusted “with the mission of preparing the way and baptizing the Savior of the world.” (Bible Dictionary: John the Baptist). I’m really glad I looked at all these scriptures and references of John the Baptist.

About all I knew previous to this was what is taught in Primary. After reading this I can see why people would rejoice in John the Baptist’s birth and ministry. John was extremely influential in the preparation for Christ and made a difference for so many people by preaching and baptizing. I hope one day I get to meet him.
